Introduction To Tunisian Crochet With Ellen Silva

Tunisian crochet in the round makes a wonderful, elastic, and colorful fabric perfect for hats and cowls and mitts. Don’t let the complex woven look fool you – it’s easy and quick to work. The Paving Mitts, a pattern by Ellen M. Silva, is a great way to learn. Join us in class to learn everything you need to know to work these fast and fun mitts.

Ellen will start with an introduction to Tunisian crochet, worked flat and in-the-round, and then she’ll quickly move on to techniques. After working on a swatch for the first part of the class, she'll get you started on making the mitts. You’ll be introduced to Tunisian crochet pattern instructions as well as stitch schematics. This class is a great way to get started in this fun approach to crochet.

No prior crochet experience is needed; it helps to know how to make a slip knot, but we can even teach you that. Please purchase your yarns ahead of time, if possible, and have them wound in a ball, ready to work, though we will allow time for yarn shopping in the store, if needed. The pattern will be supplied as part of the class materials, which will also include a helpful tips sheet and an exclusive-to-the-class instruction sheet for alternative edgings, plus a simple wrister pattern.

Materials for class (all available at StevenBe):

  • Double-ended crochet hook, Size H (5.0mm)

  • Several locking stitch markers (the kind you can clip on to your work and remove later)

  • Tapestry needle

  • ~100 yds each of two colors of fingering weight yarn. Avoid very fine fingering weight, but feel free to use slightly thicker, sport weight yarns. Choose one solid or tonal color and one coordinating variegated color for best effect. Two solids will also work well, but two variegated yarns will not show the stitch pattern well. Avoid yarns with a halo or that are not well twisted together until you are familiar with the techniques.
